Wow, I Just Got A New Computer

I was recently given a typography project at work that made me realize that my old computer was defiantly a dinosaur and that it was time to consider filling out a purchase order. A colleague and I sat in front of my computer for minuets while I watched the spinning rainbow to death, untill the process was completed in Adobe’s InDesign. I don’t want to even think about the time that was wasted watching the spinning rainbow of “Doom” (i use that comment loosely as its my roommates favorite.)

A month passed and I was still pondering if I should submit a purchase order for a new computer. I was afraid that me being somewhat new (nine months now) to the company that they would laugh in my face and I would be stuck with my “dinosaur” for another year or so. Our lead designer has the same computer as me, so its logical to say that she would be privileged first to receive a newer computer.

Last week I finally got the balls to put in a purchase order for not only one computer but two. The second computer was for our lead designer, who also needed something that was faster. I first took the PO to be to our director of finance, then to Martin our Chief Operating Office, and finally Dave our Chief Executive Officer. To my surprise the PO was signed very quickly by all three, and I was smiling from cheek to cheek. Dave asked me why I didn’t order a laptop and I told him I wanted the “horsepower” (Twelve Horses, Get it?)

Apparently, and I wasn’t told about this but they purchased the computers the day I placed the PO, and I was given the new computer last Friday with all the necessities to complete my work, including a copy of Parallels to run Windows XP so I can test websites on PC’s.

Lets take a look at the specs shall we…

  • Two 2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon “Woodcrest” processors
  • 4MB shared L2 cache per processor
  • 1.33GHz dual independent frontside buses
  • 1GB memory (667MHz DDR2 fully-buffered)
  • NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics with 256MB memory
  • 250GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s 7200-rpm hard drive1
  • 16x double-layer SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)

So I’d like to take this opportunity to personally thank everyone who made this purchase happen (including the IT guys). Without them I would be stuck in the Dark Ages playing with my G4 PowerMac. And now I have a beautiful Intel Based MacPro that sits quietly at my feet reminding me how lucky and fortunate I truly am. I have to point out that I am so fortunate to work for such a wonderful company that allows me to share my opinions and ideas with everyone, a company that allows me to make mistakes, a company that allows me to be myself, a company that allows me to excel, and a company that allows me limitless opportunities to grow.
