These last two years have been wonderful, and they will continue to get even better. My life is evolving for the better daily, and with many good friends assisting in my journey, this path to positive living has been kinder on my soul. You see for the longest time I had been a negative person in certain regards. Most of my negativity involved health and growing older. You might think that its funny that I worry about such things, but for me, especially after my car accident in 2000, health had been my main concern until recently. While I am a very healthy person, I still worry about the small things that pass my way, and these worries turned into obsessions until about two years ago when I started turning my life around.

More recently I read a book called “The Secret” which turbocharged my desire to remove all negative thinking from my life and replace it with positive thinking. You see negative thoughts only produce negative feelings. These type of thoughts can include worry, worry turns into fear, and fear is crippling. The Secret, mainly points out that “thoughts become things”. Meaning that if you think about it enough, it will come true. If you worry about not having money, the universe will return similar situations where you have a deficiency with money. The same could be said about health related items. If you think about having cancer, or worry about getting cancer enough, then the universe may indeed give you cancer. The book points out that the universe basically has no bias in what it sends to you. You are what your thoughts are. If you think about positive situations then you will reap positive situations, if you think about negative situations, then you will reap negative situations. The universe isn’t cruel, or mean, it just gives you what you think about.

So when thinking about career, personal, or financial… always be imaganitive and think/dream about situations where you have the job you want, or the house, or whatever. Be creative, be imagantive, and be positive. Whenever a negative thought comes into view, throw it away without any bias, and replace it with a postive thought. It takes pratice (god knows I’m a living example of praticing this way of "postive thinking") and dedication, but in time the world will be yours!

I discovered an interesting article today that talks about the release of HTML 5 by a group known as the Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group (WhatWG). WhatWG released HTML 5 as an updated and upgraded version of classic HTML. We here at Twelve Horses have been busing XHTML Transitional which is a bridge of HTML and XML. HTML 5 includes a few new tags, lets take a quick peak at them. If you would like to see examples I would recommend looking at that interesting article I was taking about.

Structure

section – The section element is like a section in a chapter.

header – The header element is like a page header shown on the page; not the same as the head element.

footer – The footer element is where the fine print goes.

nav – The nav element includes a collection of links to other pages.

article – The article element represents an independent entry in a blog, magazine, compendium, and so forth.

Block semantic elements

aside – The aside element can represent a note or a tip.

figure – The figure element represents a block-level image, along with a caption.

dialog – The dialog element represents a conversation between several people.

Inline semantic elements

mark- The m element indicates text that is "marked". For example, imagine highlighted passages in a book.

time – The time element indicates a specific moment in history, such as 5:35 P.M., EST, April 23, 2007.

meter – The meter element represents a numeric value in a specified range. For example, you can use it for test scores.

value

min

low

high

max

optimum

progress – The progress element represents the state of an ongoing process. For example, what percentage of a file is downloaded.

Embedded media

video – The strong tag can embed any format of video content instead of the different ways each proprietary video format must be embedded.

audio – Complementary to the video element, the audio element is also proposed. For example, you might attach background music to a Web page.

Interactivity

details – The details element represents further information that might not be shown by default. For example, footnotes.

datagrid – The datagrid element serves the role of a grid control. It’s intended for trees, lists, and tables that can be updated by both the user and scripts.

Conclusion

While this is a good solid update to HTML, I still think that XML has a huge future. It is a much easier language, where you yourself, create your own elements, and then use CSS to define the look of it. While I don’t think HTML 5 will be used for a few years, its defiantly interesting in contrast to the development of XHTML. Personally I think we need a faster blink tag. What do you think?

I am getting ready to make an life altering choice. The cleanse and eating well coupled with daily exercise should help me wonders, not only physically but also mentally.

The Master Cleanse, an detox diet, also known as the Lemonade Diet was created by Stanley Burroughs in 1941. The Master Cleanse is said by Stanley Burroughs to eliminate toxins and congestion that have built up in the body.

Now before any of you scold me, or think that I may become weak, lethargic, etc etc because of an 14 day cleanse, think again. Supporters of the Master Cleanse have credited it with helping them lose weight, increase energy, elevate mood and even alleviate some chronic diseases.

The date has not been set but I will be doing a video blog on it. I’ve decided that its more personal that way and would be a far more effective way to communicate ideas.

I am proud to announce that a new release of PattersonGrafiks will soon be released to the public. I know that it seems that I may update the site a lot and in my opinion, trust me, this is a good thing. The main reason is to keep the site up to date with the latest coding technologies out there. I also want to implement new design styles that I have learned to spruce up the general look and feel of the site, making it more user friendly and more design orientated. A majority of sites look too templatized. The current rendition of this site, the one you see in front of you, looks exactly that way, too templatized.

Real quickly here are the features to come:

Multimedia gallery (includes video blog, cell phone snapshots both video and still images, and other still images)

Updated logo for PattersonGrafiks (no major changes)

Updated menu system, and improved user interface.

New photo gallery using the newest Flash technologies.

Updated portfolio gallery using the newest Flash technologies.

New skills set section

Expect to see the changes rolled out individually with a 100% completion date set for mid August. Thanks everyone for their continued support with this evolving website.

So I was shopping at Helly Hansen the other day and talked to a very nice associate. In the process of trying on new running shorts, I took better notice to the music that was playing and told him that I really liked the music. He told me that he was using a internet radio service called Pandora. He of course was listening to Tiësto, who could be considered on of the worlds best DJ’s.

Pandora is a excellent internet radio application that allows you to enter an artist or keywords, and based off of what you enter, it will create a radio station for you and find similar artists. Anyhow… I encourage each and one of you guys to check out Pandora. Its quite brilliant in my honest opinion.

Lastly there is a bill just introduced in Congress that will save Internet radio from the devastating royalty fee increases that will put thousands of Internet webcasters out of business on May 15th. Please call your Representative in Congress as soon as possible and urge them to co-sponsor H.R. 2060, the Internet Radio Equality Act.

Two days ago a encryption key was posted on Digg that can strip an HD-DVD disc of its encryption was posted on Digg, as the posting became more popular, and Digg administrators became aware of this issue, the decision was made to delete the posting and all comments relating to it. However Digg users caught on to this quickly and became very upset. Literally thousands of posts flooded Digg containing the HD-DVD encription code and Digg administratiors were unable to keep up with the flood of postings. This issue with encryption first emerged at the end of last year when the AACS admitted that a hacker had bypassed security on some HD-DVD titles. The hacker, known as muslix64, has been able to access the encryption keys which pass between certain discs and the player. Once those keys have been obtained the disc can be stripped of its encryption.

Last night, Digg creator, Kevin Rose, posted a blog posting saying…

“But now, after seeing hundreds of stories and reading thousands of comments, you’ve made it clear. You’d rather see Digg go down fighting than bow down to a bigger company. We hear you, and effective immediately we won’t delete stories or comments containing the code and will deal with whatever the consequences might be.”

Some people said that this was the end of Digg… but I think that this is a growing pain that every large website goes though. I don’t think this is the end of Digg. And I am very excited about the impact that it will have on the recording and movie industry. Is this a 21st century revolt? We will see in very quickly… I will blog more about this “21st Century Revolt Later”

For almost one year now I have been dependent on using the
div
tag to build websites. I have to say that I love them. This last month I have had some quick turn around times and thought I would see how long it took to actually build a site using tables instead of the
div
tag.

One of the sites I decided to tested this with was for a home builder cleint of mine. It was a very easy design that that I felt could benefit from using tables. This way I could build it out super quick. This wasn’t the case my friends. It took me twice as long to build the actual table layout compaired to a simular
div
layout. For this project I was testing this site on six different browsers.

Firefox – Mac

Safari – Mac

Opera – Mac

Firefox – PC

IE 6 – PC

IE 7 – PC

I could not get any of the six browsers to display the same way. I encountered so many styling issues and problems with cross platform CSS and HTML rendering issues. The differences were so noticeable that I decided to throw out all tables, and start over from scratch with the
div
tag.

In HTML and XHTML,
span
and
div
tags are used to describe content that cannot be properly described by other, more semantic tags. The
div
tag defines a division or section within an HTML or XHTML document and hence it’s name, (abbreviation),
div
.

A good reason to use the
div
tag is that the mark up is considerably less. One third of the code used to mark up a table environment is used with a
div
environment. Its simply amazing. Also the
div
tag gives the designer the ability to code semantically which is great for cross platform viewing (cell phones, computers, etc).

So I sit here and ponder why people would even use tables anymore. I think it has a lot to do with a coders comfort zone. certain designers and coders just become comfortable with his or her code, and they don’t want to improve upon their skills for several factors. One factor is time, it takes a good amount of time to learn a new coding concept (especially using the
div
tag). Another factor is that the coder just doesn’t feel its necessary to learn new coding concepts.

Wal-Mart recently released a new movie download site this last week. Incredibly, they signed all five major studios (Walt Disney, Warner Brothers, Paramount, Sony, 20th Century Fox and Universal) to grant them permission to sell digital DRM encoded movies to its customers via a website.

There is a great deal of competition in the movie and television download market right now and there is no real visible leader. Apple computer has yet to get all major studios on board for its Movie Download service.

The television download market is a completely different story. Lead by iTunes, Apple has signed up most major network stations and provides 95% of the video podcasting downloads. Currently Apple is the clear leader in this industry.

When I heard that Wal-Mart was offering movie downloads I wanted to check out their prices and what they had available for myself. So the first thing I did was type in the address: http://walmart.com/videodownloads

Oh uh, what is this…

We’re sorry…
Our website requires the browser Internet Explorer version 6 or higher. It appears that you are using Firefox, Safari, or another browser that Wal-Mart Video Downloads doesn’t currently support. Click here to get Internet Explorer for free from Microsoft.

Thank You

…this can’t be good at all. Wal-Mart has blocked viewing their video download site from Firefox, Safari and other browsers that it deems unfit. I cannot believe that they have restricted their website so that it can only be accessed via a Windows machine running Windows Internet Explorer. Restricting a website to a certain browser is something that I used to see during the browser wars five or more years ago.

This blog, shows what the site looked like in Firefox before Wal-Mart locked down their website. Terrible CSS/XHTML skills going on there.

Why didn’t Wal-Mart make a standards compliant website (ADA, XHTML, and CSS) and then tested it in all modern browsers? Last I learned you were supposed to build a site that utilizes the most efficient coding standards, and then testing it in all browsers?

Secondly why did Wal-Mart align themselves with Microsoft? Yes sure, 9 in 10 computers run Windows, and sure every Windows machine runs Internet Exploder… but here is where I see them going wrong. They had the choice to align themselves with Apple and they didn’t. Wal-Mart is using Microsoft DRM technology that can only be used on compatible devices. I am so sorry that 70% of the portable media devices will not be able to interface with Wal-Mart media stores or its any of its offerings. Then again why would you want to? Why not just buy the dvd off of Amazon and then rip it into your computer?

Now by no means am I trying to bash Wal-Mart. This argument is more of a CSS/XHTML standards one. It infuriates me when designers hack the code and don’t even try to do code by standards. Then again, Microsoft Internet Exploder is hardly standards compliant. A way that can save hundreds of hours a year by eliminating a great deal of errors. Furthermore Wal-Mart should have better planned this website. If they want to go against Apple and other providers of digital downloadable media they better bring it, and not be sloppy about it.
